Intumescent coating
Passive fire protection with intumescent coating
Intumescent coating is a passive fire protection solution designed to increase the fire resistance of structural materials such as steel, wood, reinforced concrete, and prefabricated elements.
This resin-based fireproof coating reacts to high temperatures by expanding and forming a thick insulating char layer, which slows down heat transmission and protects the structure from deformation or collapse.
Applied by airless spray or, in specific cases, by brush or roller, intumescent coatings are ideal for meeting European fire resistance standards – commonly classified as REI: R (load-bearing capacity), E (integrity), and I (insulation).
What is intumescent coating and how does it work?
Intumescent coating is a passive fire protection solution designed to limit the spread of flames, smoke and heat in the event of a fire.
Intumescent coatings contain special additives that react to high temperatures by releasing an inert gas. This chemical reaction causes the coating to expand into a thick, insulating char layer, which protects the structural material underneath—typically steel, wood, or concrete—from overheating or collapsing.
This thermal barrier significantly increases the fire resistance of structural elements, helping maintain load-bearing capacity for a longer period during a fire.
Unlike active fire protection systems (such as sprinklers or extinguishers), passive fire protection helps contain the fire and preserve the structure, without requiring activation.
Key benefits of intumescent coatings:
React to heat by forming an expanded, protective layer
Slow down the temperature rise of structural components
Insulate and preserve the integrity of the materials underneath
Help prevent deformation, failure, or collapse during a fire
Applications of intumescent coatings for passive fire protection
Not all intumescent coatings are the same. At FES Global Group, we work exclusively with REI-certified fire resistant coatings designed to meet specific fire safety requirements in civil, industrial, and public buildings.
The REI rating defines the fire resistance of a structural element based on its ability to maintain mechanical strength, prevent the spread of flames and hot gases, and limit heat transfer to surrounding areas. This classification is essential to ensure effective passive fire protection, especially in settings where fire regulations require high performance over specific time intervals (REI 60, 90, 120 or 180).
FES Global Group offers tailored application of intumescent coatings for different construction materials:
Intumescent coatings for steel
Help protect load-bearing metal structures by slowing heat absorption and preventing structural collapse.Intumescent coatings for timber
Expand to form an insulating barrier that slows combustion and preserves material integrity.Intumescent coatings for concrete and reinforced concrete
Limit heat transfer and prevent cracking, spalling or weakening of the structural core during a fire.
