Comune di Milano – EXPO 2015

2015

The Ponte Trentino Pedestrian Bridge is one of the main infrastructure projects delivered for Expo Milano 2015, connecting the exhibition site to the commercial area of Rho. Unlike many temporary structures built for the event, the bridge remains in permanent use, serving both residents and daily pedestrian flows.

Stretching 527 metres and spanning roads and railway tracks, the bridge ensures a safe and continuous passage. The structure is composed of steel lattice beams, weighing a total of 2,100 tonnes with over 5 km of welded beams.

The client's goal:

The City of Milan commissioned FES to perform a comprehensive protective treatment of all steel surfaces, ensuring the bridge’s long-term durability and resistance to weathering, both during the Expo and for ongoing urban use.

Our services

Mechanical cleaning of surfaces using compressed-air abrasives to remove rust, scale, old paint, and impurities, creating a rough profile optimal for coating adhesion.

Application of specialised powder paints offering superior chemical, thermal, and mechanical resistance, ensuring coating durability even in extreme environments.

Applied treatments prevent material degradation caused by chemical and atmospheric agents. These protective coatings extend the life and functionality of steel surfaces, forming a barrier against oxidation and aggressive substances.

Results

FES’s intervention ensured both structural protection and aesthetic integration within the urban context, meeting the highest quality standards. The bridge remains a key infrastructure landmark in the metropolitan Milan area, demonstrating longevity, safety, and functional reliability.
