Corda Molle Bridge
Brescia, Italy
In May 2025, Itinera S.p.A., on behalf of Autoviapadane, commissioned FES for the maintenance, restoration, and protection of the steel structures of the Corda Molle highway bridge. The goal was to preserve the bridge’s integrity and ensure its long-term durability. The Corda Molle Bridge in Brescia is a strategic infrastructure, both functionally and architecturally. Located in Poncarale (Brescia), it connects the Ospitaletto (A4) and Poncarale (A21) motorway junctions.
The works began on 20 May 2025 with a team of 23 specialised operators. Operations started from the central yellow arch and progressed north towards the site container, extending gradually to the green arches. Six Zoomlion and Genie platforms were installed for safe working at height throughout the project.
Project phases
The restoration required a comprehensive and reliable surface treatment cycle.
1. Surface preparation
Initial high-pressure washing and tests (salt tests and dust tests) were carried out. Sweeping and dry sandblasting to Sa 2.5 standard were applied in the most degraded areas to remove deep oxidation.
2. Dust removal
Surfaces were meticulously cleaned using compressed air from compressors equipped with condensate separators, providing 14,000 litres per minute. This step was essential to ensure perfect adhesion of the protective coatings.
3. Protective coatings
A surface-tolerant epoxy primer in light aluminium was applied at 300 microns dry film thickness in two coats, followed by a stripe coat in critical areas such as corners, edges, and bolts. The final finish consisted of high-performance fluorinated enamel, selected for long-lasting anti-corrosion protection in aggressive urban environments.
4. Colours and finishing
Two RAL colours were selected to enhance the bridge’s aesthetics: RAL 7047 for the arches and RAL 5010 for the deck and connecting pipes. The result is a uniform, glossy, and durable finish, combining functional protection with visual appeal.
Quality control
Every phase included rigorous quality checks, including salt tests, dust tests, thickness measurements, and environmental monitoring. This ensured compliance with technical specifications and delivered a reliable, long-lasting result to the client.
Our services
Mechanical cleaning of surfaces using compressed-air abrasives to remove rust, scale, old paint, and impurities, creating a rough profile optimal for coating adhesion.
Applied treatments prevent material degradation caused by chemical and atmospheric agents. These protective coatings extend the life and functionality of steel surfaces, forming a barrier against oxidation and aggressive substances.
